3. Digital Basics
Foundational Skills for Developing your own Digital History practice
To be started within week 3, Sept 27 - Sept.
May be completed any time up to the end of week 4, Oct 4 - Oct 10
The Task
When you worked your way through the CYOA syllabus, you would have been presented with a selection from the ‘basics’ listed below. Do not be dismayed by the length of the list.
The goal here is to get you set up with the tools / approaches that you’ll need later on. Some of the items below involving merely installing things. Others are more conceptual. A few will involve some actual - gasp! - coding. You’ll be ok. Do the tutorials as per your selection in the CYOA.
As a reminder, these might include:
Writing in Markdown and Reproducible Research mission critical
Basics of Github (web interface) mission critical
Basics of Github (command line interface) mission critical
Introduction to the Command Line / Terminal (mac, windows) mission critical
Grabbing Data from the Web with R (and a quick primer on Excel, too)
Do I Have To Do These In Splendid Academic Isolation?
No. No heroes here. Collaborate. Talk each other through things. Grab a cup of coffee, grab a beer. Find a nice picnic table out on the quad. Ask for help in discord. Show each other solutions to the problems you’ve encountered.
